Poker 101
Hand Rankings (Memorize These)
All 10 poker hand ranks from worst to best, with tie-breakers explained.
From weakest to strongest
These are the 10 hand categories. Memorize the order — you'll use them every single hand:
- •High Card — no pairs, just the highest card you have. (e.g. A-K-7-4-2)
- •One Pair — two cards of the same rank. (e.g. 9-9-K-5-2)
- •Two Pair — two different pairs. (e.g. K-K-7-7-3)
- •Three of a Kind (Set/Trips) — three cards of the same rank.
- •Straight — five cards in sequence, any suits. (e.g. 5-6-7-8-9)
- •Flush — five cards of the same suit, any order.
- •Full House — three of a kind + a pair. (e.g. K-K-K-7-7)
- •Four of a Kind — four cards of the same rank.
- •Straight Flush — five cards in sequence, all the same suit.
- •Royal Flush — A-K-Q-J-10 all the same suit. The unbeatable nuts.
Tie-breakers (kickers)
When two players have the same hand category, the higher-ranked cards win. If both have one pair, the higher pair wins (KK beats QQ). If they have the same pair, the next-highest 'kicker' card decides (KK with A kicker beats KK with J kicker).
Key takeaway
High Card → One Pair → Two Pair → Trips → Straight → Flush → Full House → Quads → Straight Flush → Royal Flush. Higher beats lower.
