Irish Poker Rules: The Hold'em–Omaha Hybrid, Explained
Irish poker deals every player four hole cards, like Omaha. You bet preflop and on the flop holding all four. Then, after the flop betting round, every remaining player discards two cards and the hand finishes exactly like Texas Hold'em — turn, river, and a normal Hold'em showdown where you may use both, one, or neither of your remaining hole cards. (Not to be confused with the drinking game of the same name.)
Irish poker is the bridge game: it starts as Omaha, ends as Hold'em, and packs the most interesting decision of either game into one moment — choosing which two cards to carry to the river. It is a home-game favourite precisely because four-card flops create big pots while the Hold'em finish keeps the rules familiar.
The rules, step by step
- 1. Deal: blinds post as normal; each player receives four hole cards face down.
- 2. Preflop betting: standard round starting left of the big blind, everyone holding four cards.
- 3. Flop + betting: three community cards, then a betting round — still four cards each.
- 4. The discard: after flop betting completes, every active player mucks exactly two hole cards face down. They cannot be retrieved.
- 5. Turn, river, showdown: two more streets with betting, then a standard Hold'em showdown — best five cards from any combination of your two hole cards and the board.
Note the showdown rule carefully: unlike Omaha there is no "exactly two hole cards" requirement once the discard is done. Betting structure is a table choice — no-limit is the common home-game default, pot-limit shows up in games that want the Omaha streets tamed.
The two-card discard decision
You see the flop with six cards of information (four hole + three board) and must compress to a two-card Hold'em hand. The guiding rule is the same as Crazy Pineapple's single discard, doubled in weight: keep the two cards with the most nut potential on this exact texture, not the prettiest pair of cards in a vacuum. Holding A♠A♦9♠8♠ on a 7♠6♠2♦ flop, the "obvious" keep (A♠A♦) is often wrong — A♠9♠ or A♠8♠ keeps the nut flush draw plus an overpair out, while bare aces are a one-pair bluff-catcher in a game where flops hit four-card hands hard.
One trap unique to Irish poker: a made flop hand that cannot survive the discard math. Flopping two pair with, say, K♦7♣ from K♦Q♠7♣3♥ is fine — you keep K7 — but flopping a straight with three of its cards in your hand is impossible to protect if the fourth card you need to keep is also working. You can only carry two cards forward; count what your keep actually makes, not what your four cards touched.
Strategy for Hold'em players
- ✓ Preflop, think PLO. Four-card equities run close together, so raw preflop edges are small — connected, double-suited hands that flop multiple ways beat scattered high cards. Bare A-A-x-x with dead side cards is barely a favourite, exactly as in Omaha.
- ✓ Postflop, downgrade one pair. Everyone kept their best two of four after seeing the flop, so average hand strength on the turn is far above Hold'em. Top pair is a cautious call, not a value-betting hand; two pair and better do the earning.
- ✓ Flop bets mean more. The flop betting round happens before the discard, when ranges are widest — big flop aggression from tight players usually means they do not need the discard to help them.
- ✓ Position compounds. Acting last on the flop means you also discard with more information about who is continuing. The button is even more valuable here than in Hold'em.
