How many outs do I have with a flush draw?

Nine, if the flush wins — and that is the assumption every outs chart makes silently. Against a set, one of those nine pairs the board and gives them a full house, so you have eight. Against a bigger flush draw you have none at all: every card that completes your flush completes a better one. This calculator deals every remaining card and checks the result, so it counts the outs you actually have rather than the ones the chart assumes.

What is the rule of 2 and 4?

Multiply your outs by 2 for roughly your chance of hitting on the next card, or by 4 for the chance of hitting by the river with two cards still to come. It is a good shortcut and it is close for the usual draws — nine outs gives 36% against a true 35%. It drifts badly with big draws, though: 20 outs reads as 80% when the real number is about 67.5%. The calculator shows both so you can see the gap in your specific spot.

Should I use the 2 or the 4?

Use 4 only when you are certain to see both cards — which really means when you or your opponent is already all in. If there is another betting round coming, you may face another bet before the river, so the honest number for a single call is the one-card figure. Using the 4 when more betting is still to come is the most common way players talk themselves into a call that is not there.

Why does the calculator ask for my opponent's hand?

Because an out is only defined relative to what you are trying to beat. Without a hand to compare against, the most anyone can honestly tell you is which cards improve your own hand — and some of those may improve your opponent's more. Enter their cards and the count becomes exact: cards that take you from behind to in front, with the ones that make the nuts marked separately.

What are nut outs?

Outs that leave you with the best possible hand once they land. It matters because a non-nut out can still lose you a big pot: completing the second-best flush against someone who is also drawing is how stacks disappear. The calculator counts them separately, so you can see whether the card you are chasing wins the pot or just wins a showdown you might not get to.
