Preflop Strategy: Which Hands to Play from Every Position

By AkilaUpdated May 1, 2026· first published April 1, 2026· 8 min read

The single most impactful change you can make to your poker game is tightening your preflop hand selection. Most losing players play too many hands — if your VPIP is above 25%, you're bleeding money.

The TAG Approach

TAG stands for Tight-Aggressive. It means playing a small percentage of hands (tight) and betting/raising when you do play (aggressive). This is the most profitable style at micro-stakes.

Position Ranges

UTG (Under the Gun) — 6% of hands

This is the tightest position. You act first on every street, so you need the strongest hands.

RAISE: AA, KK, QQ, AKs, AKo, JJ, TT, AQs

That's it. Everything else — fold. No AJo, no KQo, no small pairs. Discipline wins.

MP (Middle Position) — 10%

Slightly wider than UTG, but still tight. Add a few more broadway combos.

RAISE: AA-TT, AKs-AJs, AKo-AQo, KQs-KJs, QJs
CALL: 99

CO (Cutoff) — 16%

Now we're talking. The CO is where you start opening wider, especially if everyone has folded.

RAISE: AA-TT, AKs-ATs, AKo-AJo, A5s, KQs-KTs, QJs, JTs
CALL: 99, 88, 77

BTN (Button) — 24%

The Button is the most profitable position in poker. You act last on every post-flop street, giving you maximum information. Open wide here!

RAISE: AA-TT, AKs-A9s, A5s, AKo-AJo, KQs-KTs, KQo-KJo, QJs-QTs, QJo, JTs-JTo, T9s, 98s, 87s
SET MINE: 99, 88, 77, 66, 55

SB (Small Blind) — 10%

The SB is a losing position. You're out of position for the entire hand. RAISE or FOLD — never limp from the SB.

RAISE: AA-TT, AKs-ATs, AKo-AQo, KQs-KJs, QJs, JTs
CALL: 99, 88

BB (Big Blind) — 25%

The BB is special — you've already invested money, so you can defend wider against raises. But still be selective.

3-BET: AA-JJ, AKs, AKo, AQs
DEFEND (CALL): TT-55, AJs-A5s, AQo-AJo, KQs-KTs, KJo, QJs-QTs, JTs-JTo, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s

The 5 Cardinal Rules

  1. 1. Never limp. If your hand is worth playing, it's worth raising. Limping is passive and invites multi-way pots where your hand is difficult to play.
  2. 2. Raise 3x the big blind. Standard open-raise size. Add 1BB per limper in front of you.
  3. 3. Never call all-in with one pair. At micro-stakes, an all-in usually means two pair or better. Your top pair top kicker is behind.
  4. 4. Respect 3-bets. If you open-raise and get re-raised, fold everything except premium hands (AA-QQ, AK).
  5. 5. Position is everything. The same hand that's a fold in UTG is a raise on the Button. Always consider where you are sitting.
