What is Rakeback in Poker? What It's Worth in Real Dollars
Rakeback is a partial refund of the rake (the house fee taken from each pot) that a poker room returns to you, typically 15-60% depending on the room and loyalty tier. Using our sourced rake model: a 15,000-hands/month NL10 player pays roughly $118/month in gross rake at GGPoker; at a typical 25% effective rate that's about $30/month back — $355/year — from money that was otherwise simply gone.
First, understand how much rake you pay
Online rooms take about 5% of most pots (capped per pot). That sounds small, but it compounds across every hand: our rake model — built from sourced room data (rake percentages, caps, retrieved July 2026) plus stated assumptions about pot sizes and frequency — puts gross rake at micro-stakes around 7-8 big blinds per 100 hands. Compare that to win rates: a good micro-stakes player wins 3-7bb/100. In other words, most micro grinders pay more to the rake than they win from the table — the rake is the biggest single opponent in the game.
What rakeback returns, in dollars
Computed with our rake-comparison model at 15,000 hands per month (all assumptions stated on the tool page):
- •NL5 at GGPoker: about $59/month gross rake; 25% typical rakeback returns about $15/month ($177/year).
- •NL10 at GGPoker: about $118/month gross; about $30/month ($355/year) back.
- •NL25 at GGPoker: about $296/month gross; about $74/month ($887/year) back.
- •NL10 at PokerStars: about $113/month gross at a lower typical return (about 15%) — roughly $17/month ($203/year).
- •For scale: a 3bb/100 winner at NL10 earns about $45/month from play at that volume. Rakeback at 25% adds roughly +2bb/100 to your effective win rate — it can be half your profit, or all of it for a breakeven player.
How rakeback programs actually work
Three structures cover most rooms:
- •Flat rakeback: a fixed percentage of your contributed rake, paid weekly or monthly. Simple and predictable.
- •Tiered loyalty programs: your percentage climbs with volume (missions, points, levels). Advertised ranges like 16-80% describe the ladder, not what a typical player gets.
- •PVI-adjusted systems (notably GGPoker): an opaque per-player score adjusts your effective rate — recreational players get more, winning regulars often get less than the advertised tier. Any single 'typical %' for such rooms is a model assumption, which is exactly how our comparison tool labels it.
The honest caveats
Rakeback is real money, but don't let it distort decisions. It pays you a fraction of what you put in — playing more hands to earn rakeback still costs you the other 75-85% of the rake those hands generate, so rakeback never makes bad games good. Chasing loyalty tiers with marginal play is the classic trap. The right use is passive: play the games and volume you'd play anyway, on the room where net cost (rake minus rakeback) is lowest for your stake. That net-cost comparison across rooms is exactly what our free rake comparison tool computes, with every source and assumption shown.

Frequently asked
Is rakeback worth it?
At micro-stakes, hugely — computed at NL10 volume, a typical 25% program returns about $355/year, roughly +2bb/100 on your win rate. For breakeven players rakeback is often the entire difference between losing and profiting; for winners it's a meaningful raise.
How is rakeback paid?
Depends on the room: automatic weekly/monthly cash, loyalty points convertible to cash, or periodic bonuses you clear by playing. 'Contributed' rakeback (your share of each pot's rake) is the standard accounting; some older systems used 'dealt' (split equally among everyone dealt in).
What percentage rakeback is typical?
Advertised ranges run roughly 15-60%+ across rooms and tiers. Effective rates for a normal micro-stakes player are lower than headline numbers — our sourced comparison uses ~25% for GGPoker (with its PVI caveat clearly flagged) and lower typical figures elsewhere. The advertised maximum is a marketing number.
Does GGPoker have rakeback?
Yes — currently via its Ocean Rewards ladder (16-80% advertised) — but GG's PVI system adjusts every player's effective rate individually, and winning regulars often receive less than their tier suggests. Treat any specific GG rakeback percentage as an estimate, not a promise.
Is rakeback better than deposit bonuses?
They're the same mechanism on different schedules: bonuses are prepaid rakeback you unlock by generating rake. A 100% deposit bonus that clears at ~20% effective return is comparable to a 20% rakeback program while it lasts. Grinders prefer ongoing rakeback; occasional players often net more from bonuses.
Do tournaments earn rakeback too?
Usually yes — the tournament fee (the '$1' in a '$10+$1' buy-in) is the tournament equivalent of rake, and most loyalty programs credit it the same way. A volume MTT grinder paying 9-10% fees on hundreds of buy-ins a month often earns more rakeback than a cash player at similar stakes.
