What we measured

A paired board means the five community cards contain at least one pair (two or more cards of the same rank) by the river. Equivalently, it is any board that is not five completely different ranks. Paired boards enable full houses and quads and can counterfeit two-pair hands.

How it was calculated

Exact combinatorics: the chance of five all-different ranks is C(13,5) x 4^5 / C(52,5); a paired board is one minus that.

Frequently asked questions

How often does the board pair?+

About 49.29% of the time — just under half of all hands the five community cards contain at least one pair by the river. That is roughly 1 in 2.0 deals.

Why does a paired board matter?+

A paired board means full houses and quads are possible, and it can 'counterfeit' hands like two pair — your two pair can be outranked by anyone using the board pair with a higher side card. It is the single most common way a strong-looking hand loses value.
