What a weighted range actually is

A range is the set of hands you would play a certain way in one spot, and a weightis the share of a hand class's combos inside it. AKs at 100% contributes all 4 suited combos; at 50% it counts as 2. That matters because modern preflop play is full of mixed strategies — a hand that 3-bets half the time and calls the other half belongs in the 3-bet range at 50%, not in or out. Binary grids can't say that; this one can, which is why every stat on this page (combo count, % of hands, average equity) is weight-adjusted. The arithmetic is fixed by the deck: 6 combos per pocket pair, 4 per suited hand, 12 per offsuit hand, 1,326 combos in the full grid — numbers this page's engine reproduces exactly.

How the equity numbers are computed

Press Calculate equity and a background Web Worker runs a Monte Carlo simulation for every weighted hand in your range: deal one of its combos, deal the opposing range a combo in proportion to its weights (skipping card conflicts), complete a random 5-card board, and score both 7-card hands. Ties count as half a win. At the default 5,000 trials per hand class each cell is accurate to roughly ±1%, and the range average pools all trials so it is much tighter. As a calibration check, running a 100%-of-hands range against another 100% range with this engine averaged 49.96% over 507,000 trials — statistically indistinguishable from the true 50%.

One honest caveat, printed on the results card too: equity is not EV. Equity is your pot share if both ranges checked to showdown. It ignores position, bet sizing, fold equity, and equity realization, and this tool never claims solver output. A hand like A5s can show modest raw equity yet be a fine 3-bet bluff for reasons equity alone can't see.

Worked example: BTN open vs BB defend

Load the library's BTN open · 6-max · 100bb range (76 hand classes, 530 combos, 40.0% of hands) and set the opposing range to BB defend · vs BTN open (590 combos, 44.5%). Computed with this engine at 20,000 trials per hand class, the BTN range averages 51.4% equity— barely above a coin flip, despite opening "better" hands. The heatmap shows why: the premium tip is tiny (AA 85%, KK 79%, QQ 74%) while the wide bottom — J6s 38%, Q8o 40% — drags the average down, and even A5s sits at just 53%. That is the real lesson of range thinking: position and initiative, not raw equity, are what make a 40% open profitable. Rebuild the bottom of the range yourself — drop the weakest offsuit hands to 25-50% weight — and watch the average climb as the combo count falls.
