5-Card PLO is pot-limit Omaha with five hole cards instead of four — still exactly two hole cards plus three board cards at showdown. The fifth card lifts every player from 6 to 10 two-card combinations, which compresses preflop equities, makes nut hands appear far more often, and turns non-nut "good hands" into the main leak. Winning adjustments: tighter nut-focused preflop hands, nut-or-fold drawing, and a deeper bankroll.

The math: why one extra card changes so much
Hand strength in Omaha variants is driven by how many two-card combinations you hold. The counts are pure combinatorics:
- • Hold'em: 2 hole cards = 1 two-card combination.
- • PLO (4-card): C(4,2) = 6 combinations — six times Hold'em.
- • 5-Card PLO: C(5,2) = 10 combinations — a further two-thirds jump over PLO.
Ten combinations per player means a 4-way flop is contested by 40 two-card holdings. The consequences follow mechanically: the average winning hand at showdown is stronger (someone usually has the nuts or close), preflop equities compress (even premium hands are rarely huge favourites, the same force that drags AAxx down to roughly 62-65% vs a random four-card hand in PLO), and draws are live in more directions at once, so made hands need redraws to keep their value.
The five core adjustments
- 1. Draw to the nuts or don't draw. King-high flush draws and low-end straight draws are reverse implied odds in a costume. Before calling, name the exact cards that give you the best possible hand — if you can't, fold.
- 2. Demand five working cards preflop. A premium PLO4 hand with a dead fifth card is playable; a hand with two danglers is not. The fifth card must add a nut suit, straight connectivity, or set value — otherwise you are playing a handicapped PLO4 hand into full PLO5 hands.
- 3. Downgrade bare aces again. The Hold'em-to-PLO lesson doubles here: unimproved overpairs are bluff-catchers. Big pairs want double-suited, connected support before big money goes in preflop.
- 4. Respect turn and river aggression. With this much combination density, big bets on late streets are the nuts or a redraw-backed semi-bluff far more often than a naked bluff. Hero calls with one-pair-plus-nothing are donations.
