Pot Odds Explained: Make Profitable Calls Every Time
Pot odds are the foundation of poker math. Understanding them separates breakeven players from winners. The good news? It's simpler than you think.
What Are Pot Odds?
Pot odds tell you how much you need to win vs. how much you're risking. It's the ratio of the pot to the bet you need to call.
Pot Odds = Bet ÷ (Pot + Bet)
Example: Pot is $10, villain bets $5.
Pot Odds = $5 ÷ ($10 + $5 + $5) = $5 ÷ $20 = 25%
Pot Odds = $5 ÷ ($10 + $5 + $5) = $5 ÷ $20 = 25%
The Rule of 2 and 4
Count your outs (cards that improve your hand), then:
FLOP → RIVER (2 cards)
Outs × 4
TURN → RIVER (1 card)
Outs × 2
Common Outs
| Draw | Outs | Turn | Turn+River |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flush draw | 9 | ~19% | ~35% |
| Open-ended straight | 8 | ~17% | ~32% |
| Two overcards | 6 | ~13% | ~24% |
| Gutshot straight | 4 | ~9% | ~17% |
| Set (pocket pair) | 2 | ~4% | ~8% |
Putting It Together
✅ The Golden Rule
If your equity is greater than the pot odds, you have a profitable call. If not, fold.
Example: You have a flush draw (9 outs = 35% equity). Pot odds are 25%. Since 35% > 25%, CALL. You'll win more than enough over time to make up for the times you miss.
